About the Position

ELEMENTS® is actively seeking another smart, professional, creative and talented designer to join our growing team. This is a full-time salaried position including some benefits. The ideal candidate will have prior experience working in a design firm or in-house design position. This is a great opportunity to collaborate with an award-winning design team and to work on a wide variety of highly creative projects – therefore, the right candidate will be comfortable working in varied industries and mediums. On a given day, the graphic / web designer will handle projects ranging from print and marketing collateral and packaging to large-scale branding initiatives, websites and more.

Design Skills

  • Prior design firm or in-house department experience (1-2 years minimum)
  • Demonstrate an excellent eye for color, composition, type and detail
  • A portfolio demonstrating a high level of creative ability with a diversity of style appropriate to a mix of projects, including both print and web (branding and packaging a bonus!)
  • Proficiency in all Adobe design software required
  • Experience creating sitemaps / wireframes / architecture
  • Strong web design / production skills
  • Familiarity with best practices for WordPress, HTML and CSS
  • Knowledgeable about HTML, CSS, Dreamweaver and capable of basic coding for website updates, online advertising and email marketing as well as designing for others to code

Production Skills

  • Skillfully manage vendors, including but not limited to, printers, illustrators, web developers and photographers and solid knowledge of pre-press processes
  • Demonstrated understanding of production for print, packaging, web, design and branding

Organizational & Work Skills

  • Bring fresh ideas, a new perspective and a sense of humor
  • Unique solutions and flawless execution
  • A demonstrated ability to understand clients’ business strategies and challenges and be able to translate those needs into compelling visual and communications solutions

Fall Design Internship

Alexander Isley Inc. Designers of Redding, CT. We are offering internships to qualified students who will work closely with our designers on a range of interesting projects. We create identities, books, magazines, exhibits, websites and signage for corporate, not for profit, and cause-related organizations.

Our internship program introduces students to the experience of working in a studio and provides the opportunity to learn by assisting experienced designers in their tasks.

Internship candidates must:

  • Be proficient in the Adobe Creative Suite
  • Have their own transportation to our offices in Connecticut
  • Be happy to work in a small studio with great enthusiasm for the power of design
  • Have strong communication skills and be open to learning

Our client-facing project managers are in the unique position of maintaining the lines of communication between clients and the creative team. BRIGADE PM’s play a key role in developing and preserving strong client relationships by ensuring creative work is delivered on-time, on-budget, and on-quality. Serving more than 300,000 adults and children each year, the Connecticut Science Center is the state’s premier destination for informal science learning, a top tourist attraction, a hub for teacher training, and one of the state’s foremost resources for Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM). The organization’s Graphic Designer is a member of the Advancement Department, which includes Marketing, Membership, and Development. The Graphic Designer produces a high volume of print and electronic promotional materials to support sales and attendance goals and develop brand awareness. This position interacts with numerous departments throughout the organization, as well as with a variety of outside partners and vendors.

Duties & Key Responsibilities:

  • Under the direction of the Marketing & Membership Manager, develop concepts and visual images for print, web, digital and other media that drives first-time and repeat visitation, corporate and individual donations, positive word of mouth advertising, and supports the overall sales efforts of all Connecticut Science Center programs, products, events and offerings.
  • Possess an intellectual curiosity about the work and mission of the Connecticut Science Center, and have passion for how the organization’s graphic communications will support this.
  • Serve as a brand champion and guardian of the Connecticut Science Center by ensuring consistent use of branding throughout all communication mediums.
  • Assist the Marketing & Website Coordinator with general oversight of the website, designing graphical elements and updating minor content as necessary to ensure a quality experience for all users.
  • Be constantly aware of Connecticut Science Center initiatives to anticipate both current and future design needs. Work closely with the Marketing & Membership Manager to plan a design workflow and keep all projects on schedule.
  • Must work well under pressure of tight timelines and shifting priorities with a dedication to meeting deadlines while producing high-quality work on-time and within budget.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with numerous outside printers, graphic designers, and vendors.
  • Maintain and keep well-organized all institutional graphic and image files, archives of logos, photos, artwork,designs, etc.
  • Other duties as required.

Requirements & Qualifications:

  • Proven graphic designing experience with a strong portfolio. Minimum 5 years related experience. Degree in graphic design or closely related field is strongly preferred.
  • Must be able to take direction and constructive criticism with an open mind and positive attitude. The ability to amend work, as required, reflecting comments and feedback is critical.
  • Meticulous attention to detail with a clear understanding of typography, layout, color sense, and marketing messaging in design.
  • Understanding of, and experience with, four-color prepress.
  • Superior creative talent, with an ability to create new and original design ideas for a variety of media andaudiences while staying true to existing brand equity.
  • Good listening skills and a sensitivity to internal customer needs.
  • Superior organizational skills and the ability to manage a heavy, and constantly shifting, workflow.
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule, including some nights and weekends and/or on special event days.
  • Commitment to being part of a team.

Required Computer & Software Skills:

  • Proficiency with industry leading software and technologies; most importantly Adobe Creative Cloud applications (InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop, etc).
  • Ability to perform job flawlessly using either a MAC or PC system.
  • Commitment to remaining current with best practices, tools, and relevant trends in the graphic design field.

Preferences:

  • Strong writing skills, in particular with grammar and punctuation.
  • An understanding of basic photography principals and familiarity operating a CMOS Digital SLR camera.
  • Some experience with HTML, CSS, WordPress, JavaScript, and PHP is a plus.

Communications Specialist/Graphic Designer

SEIU 1199 New England (Hartford & Stamford) is the largest health care union in New England. We are committed to raising standards for workers and leading the way on important social justice issues.

We are looking for a full-time, mid-level web and graphic designer to join our team. Our ideal candidate thrives in a creative setting using design software such as Adobe’s Creative Suite, but has skills in another area such as web development, multimedia production, communications, social media, etc. This position requires flexible hours and eagerness to assist on any task.

Responsibilities:

Primary responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Design print literature for mailers, door hangers, newsletters, etc.
  • Generate web graphics for web pages, social media, online campaigns, etc.
  • Compile news roundups and news clips in the morning.
  • Write and post content to 1199 NE’s digital channels, including the website and social media.
  • Write emails to subscribers to deepen their engagement with the organization and enlist their help in achieving advocacy goals.
  • Take and edit photographs for print and Web.
  • Shoot and edit basic video for digital channels.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Communications Director. 

Preferred Skills & Qualifications:

  • 3 + years of related experience.
  • Strong technical skills in professional graphic design software (InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop, Dreamweaver, Muse.  Video editing desirable. 
  • Demonstrated ability with HTML/CSS, Content Management Systems, and/or web development.
  • A strong portfolio that displays creativity and technical ability.
  • Excellent writing skills.
  • Experience with online communications, research tools and database management.
  • Experience in WordPress.
  • Familiarity with labor issues related to the 1199 NE’s core mission and its legislative agenda is highly desirable.
